Jonathan Weitzmann
Jonathan Weitzmann

Jonathan is a CEDR-accredited and CMC-registered mediator. His mediation practice encompasses general commercial, company, construction, insolvency, professional negligence, property and cross-border disputes.

Jonathan’s interest in mediation developed in Canada where he experienced the value of negotiated resolution in substantial commercial, corporate and contentious trust disputes at Canada’s leading global ADR company where he learnt that every aspect of a mediation needs to be managed with precision, efficiency and discretion. He subsequently developed his dispute-resolution practice in the UK and internationally, including through work on complex matters arising in the Caribbean and offshore jurisdictions.

Jonathan approaches each mediation with empathy, careful preparation and commercial realism. He recognises that a dispute is rarely concerned solely with legal rights: financial pressures, professional reputations, continuing relationships and personal dynamics may all affect the parties’ ability to reach agreement. He takes time to understand those underlying interests and to establish a process in which each party feels heard and able to participate effectively.

His style is calm, approachable and adaptable. He builds rapport while maintaining momentum and is prepared, where appropriate, to ask difficult questions, test assumptions and help parties assess their alternatives to settlement realistically. His experience as a barrister also enables him to understand the legal and evidential issues in dispute, but his focus as mediator is on helping the parties identify their priorities and develop solutions that litigation may be unable to provide.

Jonathan is particularly effective in disputes involving complex facts, multiple parties or sensitive commercial and personal relationships. He works to identify the issues genuinely preventing settlement, narrow areas of disagreement and translate complexity into a focused and constructive negotiation. He does not adopt a formulaic approach, instead adapting the structure and pace of the mediation to the parties, the dispute and the obstacles to resolution.

His international background gives him an appreciation of cross-cultural communication and the sensitivities that can arise where parties come from different jurisdictions, legal systems or commercial traditions. He is comfortable mediating between individuals, owner-managed businesses, professional firms, public bodies and international organisations.

Jonathan’s aim is to enable candid and productive dialogue, help parties move beyond entrenched positions and support them in reaching practical, durable and commercially intelligent agreements.
